The alias is a symlink to the target; the rewritten path is the alias name.

Dir

The alias is a symlink to the target’s parent directory; the rewritten path is <alias>/<basename>, for syscalls that must not follow the final component. When that does not fit, a hard link to the target stands in, see place_alias.
